Hemp processing
The art of hemp processing is to separate the fiber as good as possible from the woody core. The more clean the fiber is the higher the value of the fiber. HempFlax has managed to build a production line that is capable of cleaning all the core out of the fiber. With this technique HempFlax can distinguish itself in the market.
The current production line is build by the employees of HempFlax by using existing equipment from hemp and fiber processing lines. Every machine is modified and put in line according to the HempFlax system. The current production line is a result of more than 17 years of development and experience.
In the process two steps can be distinguished. First the fiber is separated as good as possible from the core, this is called decortication. The raw fiber is then led to a number of machines in order to clean the fiber even more and separate the big fiber bundles in smaller fiber bundles. This process is called fiber refining. For those who are looking very closely to our machinery can identify the old process of hackling.
The production line is capable to produce many qualities of fiber. From lower quality to higher quality:
- Paper grade fiber
- Insulation grade fiber
- Technical grade fiber (automotive quality)
- Textile grade fiber
HempFlax is at the moment the only hemp processor who is capable of producing textile grade fiber.
A part of the technical grade fiber will be send to our German Subsidary HempFlax Deutschland GmbH, where it will be processed to non-woven fleece material. This non-woven fleece material is used as a composite reinforcement for door panels for Mercedes. The mats are also used for geo textiles, growing medium and animal bedding.
The core is cleaned and dedusted in a sophisticated cleaning system and transported by a high pressure air piping to the packing department. There it will be packed in 14 kg, 3 kg and 1 kg packing.
