Growing Hemp

Since early nineties the hempcrop is a favorable crop in the traditional crop rotation. The hemp crop needs less input and gives high yields. Growing hemp doen’t need any input of insecticides, pesticides and/or fungicides.  Fertilization is mainly given by manure from pigs/cows and poultry. Artificial manure is often not necessary.

Hemp does fit perfectly in the normal crop rotation scheme. Due to the fact the hemp crop is leaving an improved soil structure the next crop will benefit from that.

Because the harvesting is done with specialized equipment will HempFlax take care of your hemp harvest. HempFlax and appointed contractors invested a lot of money in specialized harvesting techniques. HempFlax is covering the expenses of the harvest so that your financial risk is as low as possible. The grower needs to cultivate and fertilize the soil before sowing.  The seeds are delivered to the grower by HempFlax. The grower can choose for paying immediately for the seeds or settle the payment on the first payment of straw.

The best moment for sowing is beginning of may if soil temperature and humidity is optimal. Hemp needs a warm and moistures soil. The harvesting starts early august with mowing the crop. Special hempmowers cut down the crop and cuts the stems in length of 60 cm. After cutting the hemp crop the stalks are left behind in the field, where the bast fibres will be loosened by the effect of rain and dew. During this time the stalks are frequently turned over by a machine: the so called hemp turner. When the stalks have been sufficiently retted they are picked up by the hemp bale press and transformed into neat square bales. In anticipation of further processing the bales are put in dry stores in the warehouses in Oude Pekela (Groningen, NL).

Because Hempflax is taking care of the harvest the grower only needs to invest 4 hours of labor pro hectare compared to 8 hours pro hectare for growing wheat.

Advantages:

  • Labor extensive
  • Soil improvement
  • No chemicals use
  • No artificial fertilizer needed
  • Excellent weed control
  • Good crop rotation or year after year production
  • Opportunities in Organic Situations

The growing region of HempFlax is situated maximum 50 km around Oude Pekela.
